Some people might disagree with me, but I'd go for a hybrid. Great for getting around town, and they are considerably more rugged than a road bike. I'll email you about my limited experience with Baltimore bike shops that sell hybrids:)

After moving down to Baltimore and screwing up my knee to the point of needing physical therapy, I think I'm about ready to re-join the biking crowd. But the bikes that are out there seem to have changed a lot since the last time I had to buy one. I'm not looking to race or anything, just the "getting around" kind that I can use for the quick errand or when I want to get out of the house for an hour or two. Have you any suggestions as to what I should be looking for and where I can go that I won't be too horribly screwed?

I haven't been to the Velocipede project yet. Mostly Dan/Sleepnow and I tinker around. I would definitely like to check it out though. What they are doing is freakin awesome:)

one six pack of local beer to have the wheels trued. shoot, I'm in!

I tried truing my wheels last year. I got them straighter, but then when I rode for the first time, that made a lot of noise. Now I think they are back to the same wobbly shape (the front still seems decent)

I might start going to velocipede and see if I can learn anything while volunteering there... have you checked that out?
