Very sad story. Looks like the pilots never even got a chance to send out an electronic MAYDAY signal. Very sad.
According to reports on NPR this morning, they may have found the area in the ocean where the plane may have gone down. The Brazilian Navy was trying to find the wreakage and retrieve the victims.

May the Good Lord bless the souls of all the innocents who were lost in that crash.

Very sad indeed. I noticed that this story about flying being safe went away when reports of the wreckage came out.

Flying remains incredibly safe even in light of this tragedy. You’re more likely to die on the road than in a passenger airliner. Publishing that article was insensitive, yes, but it wasn’t factually wrong. Flying IS “safer than ever” even if one factors in the unfortunate deaths of all the passengers in this most recent crash.

Some friends in the aeronautics industry are saying the root of this disaster may well have been a “positive lightning” strike. That’s some pretty freaky stuff. All conjecture, of course; the most recent postulations by Air France point to fatigue issues, as judging by the debris field, the plane appears to have broken into pieces pre-impact.

I didn’t say that flying is actually dangerous, but that it seemed like someone paid to run that article after the crash. It did.

And the fact that you’re more likely to die in a car speaks more to the dangerous nature of driving than it does to the safety of flying, the rarity of commercial disasters notwithstanding.
