Where I’ve been.

bikestand0809Mourning and covering the coverage of the recent cycling fatality in Baltimore.  In case you don’t live here and have no way of knowing, a cyclist was killed by a truck Tuesday.  The truck and driver haven’t been found.

Aside from being a cyclist, aside from the fact that this cyclist was on his way to the university where I work, aside from my own use of that intersection, aside from my wife knowing him from her old job — why am I so personally upset about this?  (As is the violent loss of life isn’t enough?)

I saw him.  Lying on the ground.  Not five minutes after it happened.  I don’t want to think through the details too much or share them.  But what I saw was…disturbing.  I’m not a person who sees a lot of dead bodies, especially not of people who died a terrible way.  Combined with being sick and having things to do for work even though I’m technically on vacation, I’ve not been myself this week.

Read more here and here.

There’s a memorial Sunday at 6pm.  Stay tuned to NBBB for more details.

Johnny- I am so sorry to read this very sad post. As i have told you, a friend of ours from the Ann Arbor bicycling community was killed by a mini-van driver just last week.
It fills me with inchoate rage when i hear of a careful bicyclist being , essentially, murdered by a loser hit-n-run driver.

RIP Jack. You will live on for ever, in the young people you helped, and in the many things you did to make the world around you a better place.
    - a very sad Daniel in Ann Arbor, Mi.

So sorry to hear about this tragedy. He sounded like a really cool guy. And, Johnny, I’m sorry to read that you saw him right after it happened. That’s an image that you’ll probably never forget. I’ll be at the memorial in spirit.

Johnny- the careless driver who killed my friend Tim a week and a half ago is going to be criminally charges tomorrow. The cops/prosecutors haven’t told us what the charges are going to be, but, it is going to be some sort of the serious felony charge. I will let you know as soon as I find out.

That’s some good news in a sea of bad news. I’m glad to hear it! They haven’t even caught the sumbitch here yet.

So, the cops probably havent found anyone who even was an eye-witness? Was Jack hit in a populated part of town, or at a place where there isnt much vehicular or foot traffic?
In Tim’s case, the driver actually stopped, and was crying when the cops arrived. He is a 20 yr old guy, with an otherwise clean driving and criminal record. Due to just one moment of carelessness on his part, and Tim died a horrible death, and the guy is going to be in prison for a few years.

Almost 1pm, monday, Aug 10th. No news from the cops and the Prosecutor’s office yet.

  7. Johnny says:

Nope. No one’s noticed the evidence on their truck and turned themselves in either. I think I might sit at that intersection on one of my vacation days his week and wait for all the trucks to drive by, writing down all their plate numbers. Well, I’d do that if I thought the PoPos would act on it.

I’m just hoping they have info they’re not sharing.

Wednesday, Aug 12th. In the Ann Arbor case where Tim was killed by a mini-van driver, the police report is currently being examined by the County Prosecutor’s office. They havent said when they will issue a decision on whether or not the driver who killed Tim will be charged.

  9. daniel says:

It is August 26th, been over 3 weeks since Tim was killed. The Prosecutors haven’t charged the driver yet. Th e police report said that the driver was negligent in operating his vehicle. It is frustrating to have to wait so long.
