After doing a lot of work this weekend toward cleaning up Baby’s room (especially the huge closet holding twelve years of two people’s notes), etc., I am relaxing with a delicious sampler I treated myself to last Friday. My recycling bin is doubled and then still overflowing, and I am covered in papercuts. I’ve been offline most of the weekend, and it feels great. Felt. Great.

With Baby this close and so much left to do, I’m finding it difficult to really care about much else. My hair looks terribly. Seriously.

Aside from getting ready for Baby in practical ways, all I find myself interested in is hanging out with Mama, listening to music for Baby, watching the Olympics, “Gilmore Girls” and movies from Netflix.

One: The ways in which I have been spoiled today, culminating in a lovely sunset and cool evening (the end of summer?). From chocolate chip pancakes to delicious mattar paneer, this was a very yummy day. And there was also a fun dinner at Joe Squared last night, complete with French lager, Czech lager, Irish stout and chocolate cake.

Two: What I said I wanted since spring (when we decided to have a baby). I wanted Mrs. FP to be pregnant, and I wanted to know. With my party three weeks ago and the best news I ever received two weeks ago, I thought my birthday would be anti-climatic. But it wasn’t.

Thanks to everyone who made this three weeks of awesomeness. I am a very fortunate 30-year-old. Ahem, 29-year-old (again, ahem).

My family and friends threw a fantastic party last weekend for my Dad and I. Papa turned 60 on August 2nd, and I turn 30 on August 30th. It was awesome. Great food, two cakes, two kegs of beer, very excellent company, hand-painted signs (mine had a bike; Dad’s had a Mustang) — it’s own name: JOHNAPOLOOZA (since we have the same name). A lot of people put a lot of work into a very nice evening. And I only got thrown in the pool once. My youngest brother, well, he went in three times. The last time, my sister-in-law and I just flipped him over the side.

My father and I look much more alike when I’m not bearded. He looked exactly like me in his 20s. I keep trying to convince him to grow a beard, but no luck. I think 30 years in the military have him liking to be clean-shaven. But now you see where I get my extreme hairiness from.

(Photo Friday: Young and Old, coincidentally.)

I have always been both fascinated by and obsessed with drinks. Not alcoholic ones, mind you. Beverages. When I was a kid, I was always always thirsty. I needed juice or soda or milk constantly. I realize now that it was because I could literally not stand to drink water until I was 20 years old and was probably mildly dehydrated all the time. I think I’ve mentioned that I’m 29 and have been drinking coffee consistently for about 21 years, daily for 20. I’m American, so you know I’ve had my share of Coke. Etc.

So I began reading A History of the World in Six Glasses last night, and I am enjoying it immensely. I was tempted to consume the beverage in question while reading the six parts. Still am. But I read for my lunchtime whenever I can, and I can’t very well get tanked at work. (That only happens when I need to talk to someone and have to track them down at a community happy hour and — poor me — have to drink beer in the afternoon……..trying to think of who I can track down this week……..) Perhaps after the third part, when the drinks under examination are coffee, tea and Coke, I can indulge.

I toasted my recently passed-away Uncle Harry today at the Taste of Waverly. When he lived in Boston (while I was small), he would spend his vacation in Maryland with the family — to include playing in the pool and yard with the boys. He enjoyed a beer, some crabs, the cigarettes he used to smoke a long time ago and people he cared about nearby.

He was one of the sweetest people I have ever known.

He was a fan of Pabst. The smell of “regular” beer always makes me think of him. More so now.

A few weeks ago, my friend and I embarked on a milkcrate installation and tire/tube replacement on a quiet Saturday afternoon. It was very spur-of-the-moment and got more so with the addition of snacks and beer. I got some photos of Mr. D doing funny things with his knee brace, but I’ll keep those to myself.

This probably makes it look like we’re whinos. But this was definitely a treat for both of us.
